TESL 160 - Assignment 2


Here is an infographic and activity adaption that I have done as part of my TESL course. The activity is one that can be found in the Activities page. It is an activity to get learners to speak and have conversations. The activity can also be done as an ice breaker activity.

TESL 100 - Digital Technologies reflection

Digital technology in the classroom is a topic in which I am very interested.  I have spent a good amount of time in my educational career learning about and using technology.  In my school, I am one of the resource people for the grading program we use. As a result, I see the importance of teaching English language learners about how they can interact with technology both in their learning and how they may need to use it after they become more fluent in English.  One important aspect of teaching both English and technology would be to teach learners particular terms and common words associated with technology. TESL - 130 Adapting a text

In my own classrooms, I think that it might be difficult to use this text. With the 6th graders (10-11 year olds), I think with some modification it could be possible, however with the 4th graders (8-9 year olds) I believe it would be very difficult. I say this because, the learners in my classroom, have not traveled much and many have never been on a trip without their families or even sleepovers at a friends place. They would not be able to relate to the text about studying abroad.  I would definitely need to modify the text as the vocabulary is too difficult for them. If this text were mandatory for my 6th grade class, I would heavily modify it, in terms of vocabulary and follow-up questions. The text itself is not too far above their reading level, but the questions and context is beyond their understanding. TESL 130 - Unit 2 reflection

This week, we looked at how to choose an appropriate text as well as how to adapt a text to the class level. While reading the pages from Brown & Lee’s book, Teaching by Principles , they included many different ways to approach teaching reading while also stressing the importance of using a text that is right for the learners. The book also stresses the different types of items that can be used to assess reading (Brown & Lee, 2015, p.422). The different subcategories they bring to light are: perceptive reading, selective reading, interactive reading, and extensive reading (Brown & Lee, 2015, p.422).
